(Photo provided by Leonard)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LGBTQ+ community is more than an ally to the Black Lives Matter movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, two of the <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/US\/start-black-lives-matter-lgbtq-lives\/story?id=71320450\">movement\u2019s founders identify as queer<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LGBTQ+ activists across the nation have been painting murals, organizing marches and speaking at rallies. Their message? Issues addressed by BLM affect the LGBTQ+ community, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spoke to some of the activists in Milwaukee\u2019s LGBTQ+ community who are leading the charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people in this story are referred to by their personal gender pronouns. (Photo provided by Patterson-Ramos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Solana Patterson-Ramos<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solana Patterson-Ramos is a community organizer and political campaign coordinator.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterson-Ramos worked on the Lena Taylor for Mayor campaign and is involved in the Democratic party in Milwaukee. They are gender queer and pansexual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterson-Ramos said people from all walks of life and every part of the country need to be involved in BLM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere needs to be someone yelling \u2018black lives matter\u2019 to let people know that it\u2019s a real issue,\u201d Patterson-Ramos said. \u201cYou might not know that\u2019s in your town, you might not know it\u2019s in your community or in your relationships with people around you.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterson-Ramos said there are different levels of comfort with inclusivity within the movement. Not everyone has the same level of understanding of queer issues, but there is always room for education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s no one set of leaders,\u201d Patterson-Ramos said. \u201cThe movement is not a system like the police departments are. They\u2019re not a system where everybody\u2019s in communication and everybody has the same training and everybody\u2019s going under the same leadership.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterson-Ramos said claims that the movement was not inclusive came from \u201cthe opposition\u201d to try and divide. They said its unhelpful to view the LGBTQ+ community as separate from BLM; all Black people share the struggle.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s about Black lives,\u201d Patterson-Ramos said. \u201cYou\u2019re Black, it\u2019s about you.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterson-Ramos said if you\u2019re not also fighting for LGBT Black lives, you\u2019re not fully in the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to realize that homophobia is a part of white supremacy and that hate against someone that\u2019s different from you is part of white supremacy,\u201d Patterson-Ramos said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018We need to empower cis and trans Black women to do healing justice work\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Elle Halo<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black trans activist Elle Halo wears many hats. She\u2019s a writer, community organizer and advocate. (Photo provided by Halo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to empower cis and trans Black women to do healing justice work and we need to pay them equally to do it,\u201d Halo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Halo, \u201chealing justice work\u201d means \u201cuplifting communities and addressing social justice issues in any way that intersects with public work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think being a teacher is healing justice work,\u201d Halo said. \u201cI think being a doctor is healing justice work. I think being an activist or an organizer is healing justice work. But I also think motherhood is healing justice work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halo said she favors abolishing the police and prisons. She questioned how the police could be \u201cprotecting\u201d citizens when \u201cthere\u2019s absolutely no proactive work being done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re only responding in a militarized way to the things that have already happened in our community and the lives that are already gone,\u201d Halo said. \u201cYou can\u2019t go shooting up places because people have been shot.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halo also questioned how effectively the police use taxpayer money.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halo said healing justice workers have the tools to help people re-entering society from prison and could pick up the slack for police departments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI really believe that Black women effectively act as an individual whole state-of-the-art prison re-entry system and facility every time a Black man gets out of jail anyway,\u201d Halo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halo said she has been using her platform to try to uplift those voices as well as providing support for other trans women through the group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diverseandresilient.org\/work\/cultivating-leaders\/sheba\/\">Sisters Helping Each other Battle Adversity<\/a>, or SHEBA. She said it\u2019s a common feeling among trans women that they have to \u201csell their bodies\u201d and \u201csell themselves into the system\u201d in order to gain attention for their issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomething I see in my international trans community is people just having to go to such extremes for survival when we\u2019re more than adequate by ourselves,\u201d Halo said. \u201cWe don\u2019t all have to start organizations. Pearson said he felt that because of shared discrimination, the LGBTQ+ community \u201cshould be one of the first groups standing in support and solidarity for Black Lives Matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pearson performs masculine drag as Montell Ross and is well known in the drag community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">March With Pride began with a Facebook post and quickly snowballed into a 2,500-person march. Along with other allies in the LGBTQ+ community, leaders were able to get the word out and organize the full protest in just a few days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pearson said internalized oppression can be damaging to the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s very hard,\u201d Pearson said, \u201cfor some Black gay people to stand behind the Black Lives Matter movement when you walk outside your home and you\u2019re being called a lot of derogatory names and harassed and possibly even putting yourself in danger of violence from your own people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pearson was involved in a virtual town hall to have a conversation with community leaders about inclusion and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen something happens in our community,\u201d Pearson said, \u201cwhether you are trans, gay, bi, bisexual, non-identifying, gender non-conforming: if we notice injustice happening against us, we \u2026 need to understand the support that is needed as a community of Black individuals, not just the gay community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pearson referred to the recent killing of a trans man, Tony McDade, by police in Tallahassee. <a href=\"https:\/\/avp.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/2013_NCAVP_HVReport_MR.pdf\">A 2014 National Coalition for Anti-Violence Programs study<\/a> found that transgender people are seven times more likely to experience physical violence in encounters with the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere has been no media attention for his situation and there has been no movement because of his situation,\u201d Pearson said. \u201cSo for me, for the Black gay community, for the LGBT community, we want situations like that to have just as much noise made \u2026 as we\u2019re making for George Floyd.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pearson said BLM has been brought \u201can entire different level to the nation\u201d as compared to the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNow we\u2019re asking for systematic change,\u201d Pearson said. \u201cNow we understand what systematic racism is. (Photo provided by Vega)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Angel Vega<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Angel Vega was a co-organizer of the March With Pride for Black Lives Matter protest. Vega has experience organizing parades and helped to gather people for the march.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Vega is involved with Pueblo MKE, a coalition of \u201cBrown People for Black Lives Matter\u201d made up of Latinx allies to the movement. He is also a teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere hasn\u2019t been enough attention for the queer and trans community,\u201d Vega said. \u201cBecause again, they\u2019re also impacted by this, sometimes even more so than a straight or cis man or woman.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vega said he\u2019s often hidden his identity as a gay man, but that he\u2019s put aside those feelings to embrace his whole identity for the movement. He said that he wants to respect his allyship as a Mexican American by remembering his place in the movement and leaving plenty of room for others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vega said he views BLM events as an important opportunity to educate the community on anti-blackness. He said having conversations about colorism and other issues is important and everyone needs to combat anti-Black biases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vega said he wants an end to institutionalized racism and oppression, which he says are \u201csymptoms of a decaying system, which is capitalism.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo me, it\u2019s like being in a society where we\u2019re working for each other,\u201d Vega said. \u201cWe\u2019re not working for the cis white man \u2026 the capitalistic one percent. UBLAC is a coalition led by Black women, trans people and queer people with the goal of Black liberation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard said she has been actively showing support and solidarity with BLM. She said that she wants the LGBTQ+ community to be vocal about their unity with BLM and that she has challenged people to participate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard said part of the work she does involves examining different aspects of Black lives and identity. She is planning to host workshops and initiatives on \u201ccollective understanding and collective unity\u201d about what it is to be Black in America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard expressed the importance of protesters taking care of themselves, and that she has been contemplating \u201cmore calculated and strategic ways of showing up\u201d to avoid burnout. She mentioned the importance of having a home space where people feel loved and comforted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s really about having a place outside of everything happening out on the streets,\u201d Leonard said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leonard also said the work needs to continue on long-term, systemic issues. She is a Mexican American ally to the movement, and she wants to respect the boundaries of allyship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to overstep \u2026\u201d Tavares said. \u201cI say this a lot, but I think it\u2019s important that people know that I\u2019m here to amplify other people\u2019s voices in the movement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tavares especially wants to elevate the voices of Black women, trans women and LGBTQ+ women through her art. As a bisexual herself, she wants to stop them from being \u201cerased or overlooked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tavares helped put up murals around the city. She said in terms of promoting the movement, art can be an easier avenue to learning more than reading and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s something that people can see,\u201d Tavares said. \u201cIt\u2019s right in their faces and it\u2019s like \u2018Oh, hey this is going on. These people are getting murdered\u2019 or \u2018These are the people that have been fighting for others\u2019 rights.\u2019 That\u2019s one way art can be helpful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most recent mural was put up on Locust and Holton. The mural featured black female and LGBTQ+ activists, such as Marsha P. Johnson, a Black trans woman who started the Stonewall Riots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tavares said members of the LGBTQ+ community reached out to voice concern about march leader Frank Sensabaugh, who goes by Frank Nitty, being on the mural after it was found he used anti-LGBTQ+ language in the past. Nitty has since apologized for the comments.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tavares said that while progress has been made, there\u2019s still a long way to go for herself and for the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe fight isn\u2019t over,\u201d Tavares said. \u201cThere are still trans people getting killed. There\u2019re still people in the LGBTQ+ community getting killed. There\u2019re still Black women and Black people in the community getting killed. This isn\u2019t the end of it.
