MILWAUKEE – On May 28, Literacy Services of Wisconsin (LSW) hosted its annual fundraising gala, Illuminating Literacy, which raised an estimated $124,770 to support its adult education programs. The event celebrated student achievement and highlighted how access to education creates new opportunities for adult learners and their families.

Nearly 300 supporters gathered to champion LSW’s mission to provide access to quality basic education and skills training so adults can improve their lives, enrich their families, and strengthen our community.

“Our gala is about more than just raising funds; it is about sharing our students’ glowing achievements and recognizing the dedicated volunteers who guide them every day,” said Holly McCoy-Perez, Executive Director of Literacy Services of Wisconsin. “Every learner who walks through our doors brings determination and a desire for opportunity. This evening reflects the confidence and independence that education creates.”

The evening featured a high-energy live art auction where five acclaimed Milwaukee artists – Melissa Dorn, Renee Bebeau, Paula DeStefanis, Yesi Pérez, and Ann Baer – created original, large-scale works in real time. Guests witnessed the creative process firsthand during the cocktail hour before the finished pieces were auctioned to support LSW’s educational initiatives.

The evening’s awards program highlighted the transformative impact of adult education through the stories of four scholarship recipients whose perseverance and academic achievements embody LSW’s mission. The 2026 scholarship awardees included:

  • Tinisha Brown: A hardworking healthcare professional with 15 years of experience who recently earned her high school credential after persevering through her math exams. She is now pursuing an associate degree in respiratory therapy.
  • Oscar Lucas Alejos: An English Language Learner who balanced full-time work with rigorous studies to earn his certified nursing assistant (CNA) diploma. He plans to become a nurse and medical interpreter to assist Spanish-speaking patients.
  • Rita Hernandez: A graduate of the YouthBuild HSED program and a trained CNA. Driven by a desire to set an example for her son, she will begin her studies to become a dental hygienist in fall 2026.
  • Shakila Salim: A Rohingya refugee from Malaysia who brought remarkable resilience to her studies. Utilizing her multilingual skills, she is beginning her journey at MATC to become a registered nurse.

LSW also recognized a standout volunteer who exemplifies the organization’s dedicated volunteer community: Randy Dean, a retired executive director turned math tutor, was honored for his service. Randy is deeply grateful to serve students determined to create better futures for themselves and finds that the life lessons learned from students sharing their challenging journeys are powerful, humbling, and indelible.

All proceeds from the event will support essential educational resources and skills training for the more than 1,200 adult learners LSW serves annually across Southeastern Wisconsin, helping individuals earn their GED or HSED, prepare for career advancement, and strengthen foundational skills.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin – America’s current and future role in the global economy, the factors responsible for recessions, how Washington influences Wall Street and the markets, and a forecast for the U.S. economy over the next 18–24 months will be discussed during the keynote speech at Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Economic Forum on Tuesday, June 2, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Pfister Hotel, 424 E. Wisconsin Ave.

Keynote speaker Marci Rossell, a world-renowned economist and financial expert who speaks candidly about the intersection of economics, politics, culture, and the media, is known for transforming complex economic issues into engaging, relevant stories by linking global market trends to people’s everyday lives, families and careers. As the former chief economist for CNBC and co-host of the popular morning program Squawk Box, Rossell became a household name and a must-watch source for financial news.

Before the keynote, the second annual presentation of the Herb Kohl Service Award, named in honor of one of Wisconsin’s most distinguished leaders, will recognize Robert L. Habush and Judge Derek Mosley for exemplifying lifelong commitments to service, philanthropy and community impact. Habush is a towering figure in the legal profession and the Jewish community, and his decades of leadership and generosity have left an indelible mark. Mosley has dedicated his career to advancing justice, equity and civic engagement. (See the news release announcing the winners.)

Entering its 13th year, the annual Economic Forum draws a sellout crowd of more than 500 prominent business and community leaders from the Milwaukee area. The Federation organizes the Economic Forum to address issues critical to the city’s and the region’s economic success while promoting the community’s well-being.

Sponsors of the Economic Forum 2026 include Herb Kohl Philanthropies and Wintrust | Town Bank, along with 40 additional sponsors.

The event co-chairs are Linda Gorens-Levey, partner at General Capital Group; David Lubar, CEO/president of Lubar & Company; and Greg Marcus, CEO/president of The Marcus Corporation.

Milwaukee, WIMay 28, 2026 – Cathedral Square Friends are delighted to announce that there will be a celebration for the Honorary Street Naming of East Wells Street located in downtown Milwaukee for Cecilia “The Queen” Gilbert on Thursday, June 18, 2026. The event will be held on the Southwest Corner of Cathedral Square Park starting at 5 p.m. and will feature several Milwaukee dignitaries, friends and family.

The effort to recognize Cecilia Gilbert with an honorary street naming has been spearheaded by Cathedral Square Friends, a board that she was an active member of beginning in 2021 until her passing in 2024. When asked why it was important to honor Cecilia in this way, Board President Dave Reid shared this: “Cecilia spent her life making Milwaukee a better place. From her 40 years at the city, to the boards she sat on, which included the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Visit Milwaukee, Black Public Relations Society, Pabst Mansion and Cathedral Square Friends, just to name a few, she moved Milwaukee forward with her passion and joy. But mainly, it’s because she was the Queen of Milwaukee.”

Cathedral Square Board Member Dan Taylor added: “Cecilia was a unique person who had an incredible ability to bring people together. For the past 30 years Cathedral Square and the East Town neighborhood were her “living room” where she lived, met people for dinner or drinks, met friends for Jazz in the Park. Her impact on the neighborhood was profound. . . . Anytime Cecilia walked in the Cathedral Square area, everyone recognized her and knew she was “holding court” somewhere near the corner of Jefferson and Wells.” The Friends have found it only fitting to honor “The Queen” in this way and keep the spirit of Cecilia alive in Cathedral Square Park, a place where she could meet old and new friends and enjoy downtown Milwaukee to the fullest.

The Honorary Street Naming of East Wells Street program will begin at 5 p.m. on

Thursday, June 18, 2026, and will include remarks from:

  • Welcome and Emcee – Dave Reid, Cathedral Square Friends Board President/

Urban Milwaukee Publisher/Co-Founder

  • Remembrance and Tribute – Tracy Stockwell, Ph.D., Professor of Communication & Technology at Alverno College
  • Remarks – Alderman Bob Bauman
  • Remarks – Tamara Sherie Mays (niece of Cecilia Gilbert)
  • Remarks – County Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman
  • Followed by Ceremonial Unveiling

(Please note: Program schedule is at time of publication. For program updates, please refer to cathedralsquarefriends.org and their Facebook page facebook.com/CathedralSquareFriends).

Following the Honorary Street Naming of East Wells Street, attendees are encouraged to attend Jazz in the Park which will include a Cecilia remembrance and tribute with a live music celebration featuring the band Respect! A Tribute to the Queen of Soul! Music runs 6 – 9 p.m. in Cathedral Square Park. To learn more about Jazz in the Park and this summer’s line up, please visit: easttown.com/jazz-in-the-park/.

About Cecilia “The Queen” Gilbert

Cecilia Gilbert worked for over 40 years for the City of Milwaukee in a variety of roles in the Department of Public Works, Department of City Development, Emergency Government, Common Council and the City of Milwaukee Commission on Community Relations. She also held a position with the Milwaukee County Supervisors. She remained active with City Hall even after her retirement in 2017 from DPW with her appointment to the Administrative Review Board of Appeals.

Cecilia had extensive experience in communications, media relations, events, governmental relations, community relations and outreach. She had a special flair for event planning and had a proven history of spearheading efforts on behalf of the City of Milwaukee with diverse community groups, non-profit and charitable organizations and for-profit entities within the Greater Milwaukee area. Cecilia was also known to many as the go-to person for any question related to the City of Milwaukee and was always happy to help people and point them in the right direction so they could get the information they needed. Through her various roles in the City, notable events she helped coordinate or assist with included the annual City Tree Lighting event, Bastille Days, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. City-Wide event, St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Great Circus Parade, the City of Milwaukee’s first farmer’s markets and Riversplash! held along the Milwaukee River.

Cecilia sat on many Milwaukee non-profit boards sharing her skills and expertise including Cathedral Square Friends, Lakefront Festival of Art, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Pabst Mansion, Visit Milwaukee, Fresh Coast Jazz, Black Public Relations Society, to name a few. She was also an active patron of the arts and was often spotted attending theater productions, art and museum openings, concerts, Summerfest and Jazz in the Park.

A long-time resident of Yankee Hill, Cecilia also took full advantage of everything downtown Milwaukee has to offer including events at Cathedral Square Park, patronizing local restaurants and bars as well as shopping. She loved it all and was well known throughout downtown establishments as one of their favorite customers.

Known for her magnanimous spirit, Cecilia left an impression on everyone she met. She had a remarkable memory and could recall names from people she knew over 50 years ago. Her contact network was wide and deep. In addition to her role in the City and her volunteer work, she was also devoted to her large family, circle of friends and was a mentor to many. She rightly deserved being called “The Queen” and has been sorely missed since her passing in August 2024 after a short illness. Cecilia’s spirit will continue to live on in downtown Milwaukee with the Cecilia “The Queen” Gilbert Honorary Street Naming. Somewhere she will be smiling.

Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Milwaukee is hosting it’s second annual Prevention in the Park event coming up on June 4 from 3 – 6 p.m.

Early June is a great time to remind our community about summer injury prevention. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, emergency department visits increase 15-20% across the country. As we enter June, the weather is nicer, school is letting out and everyone is participating in more outdoor activities – riding bikes, scooters, boating, swimming and having bonfires and cookouts. Often times, there are safety measures we often forget to follow after being cooped up inside for the winter.

Prevention in the Park takes place outside of Ascension Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital, in connection with local law enforcement, at the green space in front of the North Point Water Tower. Ascension Wisconsin and community partners set up different stations for education and engagement to promote healthy lifestyles, injury prevention and overall well-being as we start to spend more time outside. In addition to engaging with community partners and law enforcement, some treats such as Pete’s Pops, Kona Ice and hot dogs will be available as well.

Learn practice strategies to prevent injury and promote health and well-being from:

Broken funding, better future: Fixing public transit with RTA

Tuesday, May 26,  6 – 7:30 p.m.
Wauwatosa Public Library, 7635 W North Ave., Wauwatosa

Join the Sierra Club Great Waters on May 26 for a free program looking at options for fixing public transit with regional transit authorities.

State funding for public transit has been frozen since 2010 with no adjustment for inflation. And taxing authorities to fund transit are not permissible under current state law. This has led to a decrease in reliability and cuts in service for transit service across the state. In Milwaukee, MCTS, one of the Midwest’s largest transit agencies, and the largest transit agency in the country without its own funding source, is facing a fiscal crisis.

Wisconsin transit advocates want to address transit funding and RTAs in the next legislative session. Come learn why transit matters and what needs to be done in the near and long term to give Wisconsin the public transit it needs.

Find more information here. https://act.sierraclub.org/events/details?formcampaignid=701Po00001j9VbgIAE

The Great Waters Group is the local, four-county affiliate (Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington and Waukesha counties) of the Sierra Club. The Sierra Club is America’s largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. In addition to protecting every person’s right to get outdoors and access the healing power of nature, the Sierra Club works to promote clean energy, safeguard the health of our communities, protect wildlife, and preserve our remaining wild places through grassroots activism, public education, lobbying and legal action.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Former Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Gilbert Brown, affectionately known by fans as “The Gravedigger,” is bringing his larger-than-life presence to Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) on May 22.

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Super Bowl champion is scheduled to visit five different Milwaukee schools to connect with students, share his personal experiences, and advocate for youth mental health resources.

Bringing “The Gravedigger” energy to the classroom

During his time on the gridiron, Gilbert Brown was famous for his signature “Gravedigger” celebratory dance after stopping an opponent. On May 22nd, he is channeling that same passionate energy into a much different arena: encouraging students to break the stigma surrounding mental health.

Brown’s tour across the five MPS campuses will focus on a few vital messages: encouraging kids to open up and talk about their feelings and emotional challenges rather than burying them, teaching students how to lend support by looking out for their peers who might be struggling, and building resilience by sharing how he navigated the intense mental and physical pressures of professional sports.

Brown will visit Milwaukee John Marshall High School, Casimir Pulaski High School, Milwaukee School of Languages, Lynde and Harry Bradley Technology and Trade School (Milwaukee Tech), and Milwaukee Parkside School.

Who is Gilbert Brown?

If you didn’t grow up wearing green and gold in the 1990s, Gilbert Brown is a legendary figure in Wisconsin sports history.

Standing at 6’2″ and weighing around 340 pounds, Brown was a dominant, fan-favorite nose tackle who anchored the powerhouse defense that led the Packers to the 1996 Super Bowl XXXI victory, earning him a lasting legacy in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame on July 19, 2008. He played 125 games in 10 seasons.

During his playing days from 1993 to 2003, he was famous for his signature “Gravedigger” celebratory dance after flattening opponents, but on this tour, he is channeling that same passionate energy into a much different arena.

Beyond his football career, Brown has dedicated much of his life to community outreach, youth football camps, and charity work.

Why this visit matters

Mental Health Awareness Month, observed every May, serves as a crucial reminder to check in on the well-being of young people. By having a legendary NFL tough-man stand in front of students to speak openly about emotional wellness, the event aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging kids to open up about their struggles rather than burying them. Through this impactful community outreach, “The Gravedigger” is reminding local youth that vulnerability is a true sign of strength and that they never have to carry their heavy burdens alone.

When “The Gravedigger” steps into Milwaukee Public Schools this Friday, he won’t just be a sports icon—he will be an advocate reminding local youth that they never have to carry their heavy burdens alone.

MILWAUKEE – The City of Milwaukee Department of Administration (DOA) and the Department of Compliance and Engagement (DCE) are proud to announce City Connect: City of Milwaukee Vendor Fair, presented with the support of Executive Sponsor, BMO Bank. This year’s fair is held in collaboration with Milwaukee County, representing a unified effort to streamline opportunities for the local business community.

This premier networking and educational event will take place on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Milwaukee City Hall, 200 E. Wells St.

City Connect serves as a vital bridge between the local business community and City government. The fair offers a unique environment for vendors, contractors, and entrepreneurs to engage directly with various City departments, explore procurement opportunities, and learn the mechanics of doing business with the public sector.

“Our goal is to ensure that doing business with the City of Milwaukee is accessible, transparent, and inclusive,” said Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “City Connect is more than just a vendor fair; it is an investment in our local economy. By providing small businesses and contractors with the tools, certifications, and connections they need to succeed, we are building a more prosperous and equitable Milwaukee for everyone.”

“We are committed to fostering a city government that is as dynamic and resilient as the businesses we serve,” said DOA Director Danielle Rodriguez. “Our mission is to dismantle barriers to entry and facilitate the connections that allow local talent to thrive in our city’s most significant projects.”

This year’s event features a robust lineup of educational workshops tailored to address the evolving needs of the modern business landscape. High-priority sessions include:

  • Winning public contracts: A deep dive into the Bonfire eProcurement platform and strategies for submitting successful bids to both the City and Milwaukee County.
  • Certification roadmaps: Guidance on Small Business Enterprise (SBE), Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE), and Targeted Business Enterprise (TBE) certifications to unlock exclusive contracting opportunities.
  • Infrastructure and housing: Updates on major Department of Public Works (DPW) projects, Milwaukee Water Works (MWW) lead service line replacements, and Mayor Cavalier Johnson’s Housing Year of Housing initiative.
  • Workforce and sustainability: Experts from Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), the Department of Workforce Development (DWD), the Milwaukee Public Schools Youth Apprenticeship Program, WRTP | BIG STEP, and the Sustainable Business Council to help businesses tackle labor shortages and implement green business practices.
